Transparency in Addiction Treatment Referrals: Progress, but More to Do

Following recent ASA rulings and the publicity around EMCAT’s campaigns, we’ve seen a significant step in the right direction—a major UK addiction treatment provider has begun clearly labelling its referral websites as being operated by them.
Referral websites, often run as third-party satellite sites, are designed to inform and ultimately generate patient conversions. In line with recent ASA guidance, it’s crucial that these sites are fully transparent about their commercial intent.
We applaud this provider for taking action and encourage others in the sector to follow suit. Compliance with the CAP Code and Consumer Protection Regulations isn’t just a legal requirement—it’s the ethical standard we should all be striving for.
However, EMCAT continues to question the need for separate referral sites in the first place. Do they truly offer consumers meaningful choice, or do they simply create the illusion of options while funnelling people toward the same provider? Transparency is a step forward—but is it enough? What do you think?
Let’s work together to ensure transparency and integrity in addiction treatment services.
